capi:output-pane and its background

Hello,

I am a subclass of capi:output-pane to draw a TIFF image as status indicator.

I have not found the Right Way to have a transparent background.  Right now it is white within the bounds of the pane.  I am looking for a cross-platorm solution (OS X / Windows).  Using :background :transparent did not work on OS X.

By the way, my images are dual-resolution TIFF images and work out of the box on a retina display, which is a very nice surprise.
