Capi::output-pane-display similar for layout classes?

I was wondering if there is some function similar to capi::output-pane-display that i could create a :before/:around method for some layout subclass i've created?

I was thinking about creating a column/row layout subclass that would allow me to use a background images to achieve richer interfaces. Anyone knows if this is possible without recurring to wrapping my layout subclasses with instances of (simple-)pinboard-layout?
