LWL, Ubuntu & Imlib

Hi all,
 I'm currently having difficulties displaying jpegs and gifs using 
 LWL(5.0.2) on Ubuntu (7.04) using the imlib11 ubuntu package.
 
 When I run the following code snippet

 (capi:contain (make-instance 'capi:image-pinboard-object
                              :image "<path-to-a-jpeg>"))
 
 all that I get is a black or corrupted image (and no error messages) 
 although other image  types appear to be displaying fine.
 
 Is this happening with anyone else and if this is working for you 
 what packages/debs are you using.
