string character types

Is there any test to determine if a string contains non base-chars  
other than examining every element? For example, if I have a latin-1  
editor buffer the user can still enter any characters they want.  
editor:points-to-string returns strings of lw:simple-char even though  
some characters are out of range for latin-1.
