Is there a notion of z-order in
pinboard-layout? How can I control what gets drawn on top of what? (other than
shuffling description list)

Ah (thanks for discussion in the thread
"Pinboard layout: dynamically adding children"), this may be
done with manipulate-pinboard, deleting and adding at appropriate
position.
