meta key with mac motif

Is there a way to map the meta key to the option/alt (or command) key 
when using Motif on the Mac? It's pretty hard to use the editor without 
a meta key.

I guess this is the source of the messages I get when starting it, e.g. 
"Warning: Unknown KeySym value: 0x1002248". This is added to the 
terminal every time I hit option-x.
