load-image for output pane

I've been calling load image for an image on the first calling
of the display callback of an output pane. However, this seems
a little hack-ish. Nonetheless, load-image requires that the 
output-pane is already displayed. Is there a better time
to call load-image, or a less kludgey way to do it?
