echo area

Is there a way in capi to determine if the echo area of an editor-pane 
has the focus? capi:pane-has-focus-p returns t for the editor-pane and 
and nil for the echo-pane even when the echo-pane has the input focus. 
I don't see how to correctly execute editor commands from the interface 
process if I can't determine the correct window for 
editor:process-character.
