images and icons in CAPI:OUTPUT-PANE and OPENGL-PANE

Our application has some icons which need to be rendered to both 
CAPI OUTPUT-PANEs and CAPI OPENGL-PANEs.  What is the most 
appropriate way to load and handle those images so that they can
be rendered to both types of pane?
