capi keystrokes

What's the best way to intercept keystrokes in a
multi-column-list-panel, to give some of them special
behavior in place of their default behavior?

I would like to be able to disable the tab key in a
multi-column-list-panel, because, when the user
fumbles and enters a tab character by mistake, it
causes the panel to go out of focus, such that I can't
even find out where the focus is, and the user gets
the impression that the program stopped working.
