24 bit toolbar icons

Is it possible to use 24 bit images for toolbar icons (using capi:toolbar) ?
Or are toolbar icons restricted to 8 bit bitmaps? It's not clear to me if
there's a safe way to define the image translation.

I realise that this is largely a cosmetic issue, but I would like to
maintain forward compatibility for my application so that I need not update
the look-and-feel for some time.

Thank you,
Asha

I'm replying to my earlier message. I'm so used to thinking in Lisp now
that I had totally forgotten about the existence of other software :)

I preprocessed the images using Adobe Photoshop (the exact menu commands
were Image > Mode > Indexed Color and Image > Mode > 8 bits/channel) to
improve image quality.
